I mean why on earth would my cat pee on me out of all things!
There’s a reason for this and each situation comes with different causes
One cat differs from another.
So, it is almost impossible to know straight away what the problem is
It does require a bit of digging work from you to look for the root of the problem
Not to worry because in this article you’ll learn the possible reasons
Do you have two cats at home?
How many litter boxes do you have?
Is your cat acting unusual other than peeing on your bed?
These are the few things you need to consider.
Let’s look at some causes for this behavior
The first thing you need to do is take your cat to the vets
Why
Health Issues
The best way to understand your cat’s behavior is by taking your little feline friend to the vets
As soon as a sudden change in your cats behavior occurs such as peeing outside the litter box
Take them to the vets to make sure it is nothing health related
Because a cat may pee outside the litter box because of bladder stones or bladder infection that causes inflammation leading to the urge to pee outside the litter box.
Another health problem might be the Idiopathic Cystitis—which is the hormonal imbalances causing bladder inflammation leading to inappropriate urination.
Or one of the most common causes is UTI (Urinary Tract Infection)
You Only Have One Litter Box For Two Cats.
Honestly, most cats don’t like to share, especially when it comes to their private place where they relieve themselves
That’s why it is crucial to have two or more litter boxes at home if you have more than one cat.
I suggest having four litter boxes to get rid of your cat’s unusual and lousy behavior.
Cats are territorial, so you need to understand the space they are asking from you.
The general rule is
1 litter box per cat + 1
So basically 2 litter boxes for one cat
The reason is – some cats like to pee in one and poo in another
Another reason to have an extra is because if your cat is upstairs and the litter box is downstairs – it just makes it easier for your furball to use the litter box upstairs instead of coming downstairs
You see, your cat may just feel lazy going all the way downstairs to use the litter box so they decide to use your comfy bed!
Litter Box Is Not Clean Enough.
This is one of the most common reasons why cats continue peeing outside the litter box.
When they notice an unpleasant smell or box full of feces or urine, they would probably make more “accidents.”
You can’t blame them right – Cats are very clean animals so they would expect a clean litter box just as we would want a clean washroom to use
It is best to practice good hygiene by scooping the litter regularly.
If not, they will always look for another spot—or worse—go into your bed and pee.
If you’re too busy to scoop everyday or just get tired from work etc it’s understandable
But not to your cat!
So I would recommend in just investing in a self cleaning litter box
At least that way you never have to worry about scooping cat litter again
Fresh litter for your cat everyday is a good step of making sure your cat uses the litter box
The best self cleaning litter box?
I would recommend The Litter Robot 3
It’s expensive but it’s definitely worth it!

Your Cat Is Trying To Tell You Something
Cats can’t talk.
So, if they feel inadequate, angry, or afraid, they would likely do things you don’t like.
And this is their way of telling you something is wrong
So what I’m trying to say here is try not to get angry with your cat
Yes, I know it’s easy to say
Waking up soaked in cat urine can make you angry
But try to understand your cat is not trying to wind you up or anything
They’re just basically trying to tell you something is not right with them
So shouting at your cat and getting angry will most likely make things worse
They need your love and affection
Ways To Reduce The Chance Of Peeing Outside The Litter Box
If your cat is all clear in regards to health then that’s great!
So let’s look at how you can help your cat stop peeing on you when you’re sleeping and use the litter box instead
Put The Litter Box In a Good Location.
If you are doing your business, you lock the doors to have your privacy—the same goes for your feline friend.
Place the litter box away from space where people come and locate it far from appliances that turn on at random times like a dishwasher or laundry
The sound of appliances can scare your cat which can leave a negative association to the litter box
Also, you need to pay attention to your other pets at home.
Do you have a dog who usually plays near on that litter box?
If yes, you need to put it somewhere else where your cat can see it immediately while getting the privacy he needs.
I wouldn’t recommend having a litter box in your bedroom
I talk about the reasons why in my article – Dangers of Litter Box in the bedroom
Change Bedding Or Throw Them Away!
Your cat will always go back to places where he associated his “bathroom.”
If your bed smells of cat urine, then he will surely return and pee there again.
Another option could be putting a non-absorbent material on your bed to make it an unpleasant place for your cat to urinate.
Make sure to wash the bed sheets thoroughly and that no cat urine smell is there
I recommend a really good cat urine remover which removes the smell of cat urine
You can check it out in my article – Best cat urine remover
Don’t Use Plastic Box Liners.
Although plastic box liners seem hygienic on your part, it could be frustrating to your cat.
It might get into his claws, preventing him from digging and burying the urine and feces.
This frustration can lead to peeing outside the litter box
Change the litter.
Some cat parents use scented litter sand to eliminate odors.
However, most cats prefer unscented, fine-grained, and clumping litter, where they can dump their waste efficiently.
It’s best to get dust free cat litter as this is more safe and healthy for you and your cat

Associate Your Bed Into Something Else.
If you caught your cat peeing on you and your bed, you might want to associate your bed with his playground.
You can put his favorite toy and play with him.
Give him treats whenever he does better things.
Once you do this every day, he will eventually associate your bed with his playground rather than his bathroom.
Close The Bedroom Door
During the night make sure the door to your bedroom is closed
Always have fresh litter available and fresh food for your cat
What you should do is, play with your cat during the day and try to get him tired so during the night he goes to sleep
Maybe you can play with your cat an hour or two before you go to sleep and get him tired
Hopefully that will keep him sleeping at night
Patience Always Wins
As I mentioned earlier, getting angry at your cat would make things worse.
Instead of teaching him to do the right thing, he might feel extra anxious than before.
Waking up in a pool of cat’s urine isn’t a nice thing to embrace in the morning.
But with patience and perseverance, it is possible to train your cat and get rid of his inappropriate behavior.
