Best Cat Litter For Cats With Allergies

Cats that suffer from allergies need extra care when choosing cat litter

It’s very important to choose cat litter that won’t make things worse for your cat

Since your cat will be using the cat litter box a lot of times during the day – you need to make sure the litter you’re using won’t cause any problems to your cats allergies

The reason for this is, if your cat starts to feel irritated using the litter box because of the litter then your cat will most likely pee outside the litter box

To avoid this – choose litter that won’t cause this problem

You don’t have to worry about the research because I’ve done that for you

Of course I would recommend Pretty Litter because it’s made up of natural minerals so it shouldn’t be a problem for your cat

An alternative to Pretty Litter I would recommend is

Dr.Elsey’s Feline Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter 40 Pound Bag

This is the perfect alternative to Pretty Litter

Why?

Because it’s designed to be specifically to control respiratory disease by being hypoallergenic and low in dust and free from perfumes and deodorants

A bonus is this clay cat litter contains natural essences which can help reduce stress

Perfect for cats with allergies

Which is why I would recommend it

Let’s look at the pros

Pros

  • Hard Clumping action which helps locks in the odor and moisture on contact
  • Helps reduce stress as it contains natural essence
  • Hypoallergenic formula which is free from perfumes, deodorants, plant proteins
  • Unique low dust designed to stop respiratory problems

Cons

  • The litter can stick to the side of the litter box and may become sticky when wet
  • The litter has a slight odor to although this is nothing major or even a problem

Overall it’s a really good alternative to Pretty Litter

Although I would recommend Pretty Litter, if you think Dr.Elsey’s then it’s a good choice

The price is not too bad

You want litter to be safe for your cat

Well according to Dr. DeWire who is a Pfizer Clinical Achievement Award For Excellence In Veterinary Medicine – This is what he says

“Most owners don’t realize their cats are coping with an illness unless the disease has significantly progressed making treatment more difficult. That’s why I’m so excited about PrettyLitter.

You’re probably thinking

10 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CAT LITTER

1. What is Cat litter?

Many cat owners who live in flats or houses where their cat cannot have easy access to a garden, rely on using cat litter for their cat to use for its toilet. Cats are known to be really clean animals and they will happily use the cat litter tray rather than randomly soil elsewhere in the home.

The cat litter tray is a deep plastic tray that is easy to clean regularly and this is filled with cat litter.

The first commercial ‘kitty litter’ appeared in the United States in 1947 and was made from clay which proved to be more absorbent than sand which had been previously used by pet owners.

Within ten years, the first clumping cat litters were on sale in the UK market and these were made from calcium bentonite clay.

Since then, many different materials have been used in the production of cat litter and a popular one today is silica gel.

Silica gel is a porous granular form of silicon dioxide and has the best absorbency of all types of cat litter.

Silica gel litter also gives an excellent control of moisture and eliminates odors for much longer than other types of cat litter.

A new type of silica gel litter has recently appeared on the market called Pretty Litter.

Pretty Litter features clever health diagnostic features so that the litter physically changes color in reaction to a cat’s urine- if there is a potential health problem.

Read my in depth review of Pretty Litter to find out more!

There are also a number of biodegradable cat litters  available as cat owners becoming increasingly environmentally conscious.

2. Does each cat need to have a separate litter tray?

The straight forward answer to this question is yes. It is best to have one cat litter tray per cat.

Many cats do not like using a litter tray that has been soiled by another cat and also only one cat will use a litter tray at a time.

Place the cat litter trays well apart as many cats do not like being watched by another cat when they are using their tray.

If you live in a particularly large house, it may well be worth considering have litter trays on each floor.

3. Can my kitten use a litter tray?

Kittens from a young age will use a litter tray.

Cats are smart animals so the kitten will soon ‘learn the ropes’ from their mum!

It is a good idea to buy some cat litter that has been specifically designed for kittens as this will ensure that your kitten will not find the litter sharp on its paws.

Sometimes you find that a kitten is reluctant to use a litter box

This could be because the side of the litter tray is a little high and your kitten does not like having to scramble in – a lower sided smaller tray may work better until your kitten has grown.

Another reason why your kitten is reluctant to use the litter tray could be because the kitten feels vulnerable when they are in the tray.

The best thing to do is to obscure the view from the tray by placing it behind a plant or piece of furniture so that your kitten does not feel so exposed.

Many kittens do not like igloo shaped litter trays, but as these have a domed roof, your kitten could feel safer and more secluded.

4. Should the cat litter tray be a particular size?

Cat litter boxes do vary in size and certainly a smaller one for a kitten is ideal but certainly if you have a big tom cat, he would much prefer a more generously sized litter tray!

If you do decide that you would like to buy an igloo style litter tray, do make sure that it will be large enough for your cat to get in and out of easily.

If your cat pees outside the litter box then you might need to get a larger litter box

5. Why does my cat make a mess with the cat litter?

When cats go to the toilet, they like to ‘cover up the evidence’ and outdoors they will scoop soil over the patch where they have gone to the toilet, using their front paws.

Using a cat litter tray, they will scoop cat litter over the soiled area in the same way.

This sounds fine, but in reality means that cat litter does get sprayed in various directions.

Check that the litter tray is large enough for your cat as a small one could be causing the problem.

There are litter trays with a detachable lip and these do help prevent litter being scattered.

Igloo style litter trays certainly cause less mess but some cats do not like them, so it is best to try a couple of options to see which works best.

6. Can you use any substitutes if you have run out of cat litter

Almost every cat owner has run out of cat litter at least once! Luckily, there are a few substitutes that can be used in an emergency and these include sand, soil and sawdust.

If you have none of these, even shredded newspaper  can also work.

7. How often should you scoop or change cat litter?

Cats like their litter tray to be clean and you like their litter tray to smell nice, so to ensure a happy cat and owner, the answer is- you should change the cat litter a few times every week and scoop the poo out of the litter tray at least once- better twice- a day.

If you have one cat and one litter tray, then every other day should work.

Every day when your cat soils their cat litter it is a good idea to scoop out the poo quickly and dispose of it.

Once a week when you change the cat litter, you should clean the litter tray really using enzyme cleaner that ensures that the tray really is clean and fresh smelling.

If you find that your cat suddenly starts to soil in your bath, houseplants or on your pile of dirty laundry, they are trying to tell you that their litter tray is horrible and needs changing!

If you are always forgetting to clean the cat litter tray, it could be a good idea to put an automatic self-cleaning litter tray on your Christmas list!

8. Clumping Litter & Non Clumping Litter What’s The Difference?

There are so many different brands of cat litter on the market that it really is a case of trying a few different ones to find the one that suits you and your moggy best.

Many cat litters are made from different types of clay such as zeolite, diatomite and sepiolite – which are all safe.

Clay has a high level of absorbency and absorbancy is fast-acting so the litter tray remain dry for longer.

Unlike the clumping cat litters, this type of litter absorbs the urine but stays just as it was.

The clay also absorbs much of smell which is definitely beneficial.

The only drawback is that owners find that it can be harder to clean off the litter tray.

Clumping cat litter is designed to clump easily.

These cat litters are clay based but have the ingredient “bentoniteadded to them.

This ingredient makes the litter absorb the cat urine quickly and turns the litter into clumps, which gives the name “clumping.” to this type of litter.

The clumps can more easily remove the soiled litter as they scoop up easily.

This sounds good but some brands don’t always work as well as the manufacturers claim!

Clumping cat litter does carry a health risk. If your cat ingests even a small amount of clumping cat litter, it will absorb moisture in your cat and swell in size – causing blockages in the cat’s digestive system.

9. How much cat litter do I use?

The amount of litter also matters to your cat.

Some cats like to feel the box as they dig into the cat litter, but having more litter in the tray will help reduce the smell and stretch the time between changing the litter – providing you scoop out the pooh as it is deposited.

10 Why has my cat stopped using their litter tray?

Well the big question is when did you last change the cat litter?

Did you forget?

If the answer is ‘yes’ then your cat is protesting!

Other reasons could be that you changed the brand of cat litter and your cat obviously doesn’t approve!

Another possible reason, that demonstrates how fussy our cats are, is how you have you washed the litter tray – if you used lemon scented washing up liquid you are in big trouble with your cat as they HATE the smell of lemon!

I have written an article about this which you can check out

Why has my cat stopped using the litter box

Other reasons for cats stopping to use their litter tray include:-

Your cat is stressed because you have moved their litter tray to a new location, you have introduced a new pet into the household or your children will not let the cat using their litter tray in peace.

Your cat will just need time and they will start to use the litter tray once again.

Could your cat be ill?

Your cat could have a urinary infection developing that is making using their litter tray painful.

Pop your cat along to your Vet to be checked out and after a few days of antibiotics your cat will be feeling good again.

And the biggest question…..Is cat litter bad for the environment?

Every year, more than two million tons of cat litter ends up in landfill sites in the United States along – that is the equivalent to 100,000 truckloads.

With a view to the conservation and protection of our planet, it is imperative that more cat owners switch to biodegradable cat litters right away. At present just 5% of cat owners use biodegradable cat litter.

Biodegradable cat litters are made from many natural plant resources including wood, paper, grain, corn cobs, wheat, walnuts and grass Biodegradable cat litter can be safely disposed of by composting it.

There have been recent trials on types of biodegrabable litters that can be flushed down the toilet but there have been mixed results.

Using biodegradable cat litter has health benefits for cats and their owners as those suffering from asthma or a sensitive sense of smell as there is less dust created by this type of cat litter.

A major reason why many cat owners are not switching to biodegradable cat litter ate present is because it is higher in cost, although cat litter made with natural pine pellets is proving increasingly popular as it has a lower price tag.
